    I’m a 26 yo male who has been masturbating since I was 15. For the past few months I’ve been trying to stop the habit, but have so far only managed to limit it to once a week. I hate this habit, its messing up my life.

    I plan to journal my progress, the journal is partly to document my progress and partly an effort to hold myself accountable. Who knows, maybe it will be helpful to someone else going through the same motions.

    I am currently on day 3 of the program.

    Here are a few symptoms of masturbation I’ve noticed in myself:

    – it makes me tired and lethargic both mentally and physically, if I masturbate I need more sleep for the next 3 to 4 days.

    – memory loss and absent mindedness

    – inability to focus and concentrate

    – moody and irritable (due to the high and the dependence on the high)

    – for the first day or two after masturbating I feel very relaxed blissful. (this is obviously due to the dopamine and oxytocin release during an orgasm.)

    – light-headed foggy brain

    – feel weak and impotent.

    – guilt, shame and self-loathing

    My reasons for wanting to quit this habit are:

    1) I see it as any other addiction, I don’t believe its healthy. Like every other addiction it becomes an unconscious attachment that consumes a person. I want my mind to be clear and calm – unattached to sensuality, which means making sure my unconscious is clean by changing my conscious habits(work on the unconscious by controlling the conscious), I recommend practicing a habit for 3 months to have a real effect. You may call my reasons spiritual if you want. I do not want to become dependent on sensual stimulation for happiness.

    Day 3

    Its day 3 of my detox, my heads still feeling a bit fuzzy and drowsy, I feeling slightly less irritable than I was yesterday. I feel somewhat aimless and lethargic. My face still has a glum morose druggie look on it, it will probably look even more so after a week or two when I’ll want my next fix.

    Apart from masturbation, I’ve also decided to begin a sugar, alcohol and caffeine detox, I’ve decided to limit my caffeine intake to 1 cup of tea at breakfast everyday. In terms of sugar, I’ve decided to totally cut down on all direct sugar where possible. No more tea with sugar, no more desserts. I’ve also added more fruits and vegetables to my diet. I’ve also started weight training and running, in fact, if it wasn’t for the occasional bouts to the gym I think I’d be in a worse condition than what I’m in now.

    Thanks guys for your well wishes, I don’t plan on slipping this time though. Once I get past the 3 month period, I think I’ll avoid sexmasturbation all together, maybe until I get married. It seems the older you get, the more prudent you need to be with sex. I’m pretty certain it has an effect on the aging process just like child birth has an effect on women.

    I like to observe people around me, especially at the gym, you can tell when a person over indulges in sexmasturbation just by the state of their faces. The more chaste people usually have more contained tempered faces.

    Thanks for the link shell. The general public is not aware of the negative impact of excessive levels of DHT and its relation to ejaculation frequency. Up until now, I was also one of those who believed that whole ejaculating every day is good for your prostrate myth – what a load of crap. Then there’s the other myth that it has a relaxing effect on you, but, so do many drugs…its just a temporary high which comes at a cost.

    I had trouble waking up early today, I presume it will be easier after a week. My heads feeling a lot clearer but still somewhat foggy. I went to gym last night, did about 30 mins of weights and 30 mins on the treadmill. I felt good afterward. Not a very productive day, my head’s still a bit groggy, muscles are sore and I’m feeling a bit tired. Cutting out sugar & caffeine from my diet seems to be having a slightly positive effect.

    The longer the better, 90 days seems like a reasonable amount of time to kick the habit, and it should give my body enough time to recover. I remember seeing a study which noted that testosterone levels stabilize after around 3 months post ejaculation, the levels actually decrease slightly but stabilize – which is what I want (the study did not specify whether they tested for testosterone or DHT). From the research I gathered and my own experiences, 90 days seems appropriate.

    I don’t have any problems with testosterone levels, the abstinence is more to steady testosterone and other hormone levels for a significant period of time.

    As to what it will really do to my state of mind, hormonal levels and general well-being only time will tell, hence the journal.

    The reason why I was concerned about Testosterone is because I know for sure that my problems are tied to Testosterone levels. I can ‘feel’ that I am low on Testosterone. But I don’t know how to raise it.

    Why don’t you try abstaining for a while, give your body a chance to recover…maybe 2 months. Also if you watch porn, then stop doing that…if you need help with that send me a pm. A combination of exercise, abstinence and a healthy diet should work.

    Its getting harder, had trouble sleeping the past two nights. Had a wedding to go to yesterday, I wasn’t looking my best. Was really absent minded this morning…maybe due to a lack of sleep. I also kept fantasizing a lot last night combined with a raging hardon. I’m noticing a slow but gradual progress every day, it will probably take another 2 weeks to feel good again. I skipped gym the past two days because I was not in the mood, had a bit too much caffeine yesterday – 2 cups of tea, one cup of coffee, one coke.

    Felt a lot better as the day progressed, energy levels are up, I’m in high spirits. I also managed to hit the gym.

    Had a wet dream last night, it hasn’t really affected me. I’m feeling good today. Decided to add 10 – 15 minutes of going out and getting some sunlight to my daily routine. Hit the gym also.

    Thinking a lot about my future and where I see myself in 3 to 5 years. I’m constantly being remined that I’m aging, I noticed the skin on my face and around my eyes are starting to loose their elasticity. I started imagining the kind of life I want and how to go about achieving it. I am taking a artists perspective on my own life and trying to create the life I want – life as art, why not.

    Set goals for yourself, both long term and short term ones which accomplish the long term goals. Also monitor your daily progress against those goals, write down your progres or regress it will help keep you on track.

    impaired adrenals will increase stres hormones as well.

    Rise and fall. I know what you mean, people say abstain for 4-8 weeks. That is an eternity because so much things chance and time is long sometimes.

    Don’t worry man, I have severe PE, try having that. What exactly you have as a problem? I’ m seeing you are addicted to porn like me, for abstaining, you won’t do it yourself. I mean by that you’d need to tell your friends or a family member to support you and do other stuff or it wont be easy at all.

    im not exactly sure im definitely convinced abstaining will completely tranform a damaged body into health.

    abstaining i think can offer some benefits, but overall its such a tiny piece in getting back to normal..

    it will only help if the case if very minor…. everyone here is not in a minor case.

    i think ejaculating one time a week is good after a few weeks of abstaining, after a few weeks i think there you will notice any more benefits.

    we need to focus on correcting deficiencies and hormones.

    Its just one factor, there are other factors that play a role as well, but from my own experience abstinence does have a significant effect.

    Trying to correct deficiencies and hormones using supplements is only a temporary topical solution. What you really need is to make major changes to the way you live your life, total makeover that deals with the source of your problem whatever it is.

    When you say correcting deficiencies and hormones, what exactly do you mean? and how do you propose that it be done??

    taking TEstosterone and thyroid medicine…

    its a fact that people with lower testosterone die sooner. males with the highest hormone levels..

    i never found someone who increased testosterone from the low range to high range via natural ways..

    your more than welcome to abstain and to natural ways first it can work; it doesnt work in X amount of time, i would really start considering using hormones…

    yes there are risks in hormones, but i think the benefits outweigh the risks.

    Having gone a few days without doing it and then doing it, I now can contrast the effects better. I had trouble sleeping last night, then woke up at 3AM then went to sleep again at 4AM and woke up only at 7:30AM. I had a bit of trouble concentrating last night, but it was not as bad as the last time I did this. Brains not really groggy compared to the last time, my muscles are bit sore. Feeling slightly lethargic and moody. I slept well for the 23 days prior to yesterday – so, it definitely does affect sleep.

    Day 6: It’s getting easier because I now have a checkpoint whever I feel like doing it, I think about all the problems I have and I just dont do it. I slept well (from 3 to 1:45) but bad news is that, I lost my paper for my blood test. Gotta get another one next week, I have to do my tests.
