90 percent of 5htp will not make it into the brain because serotonin receptors line the intenstine stomach and liver. So when 5htp makes it there it is instantly turned into serotonin and once that happens it cant cross the blood brain barrier. A way to avoid this is to take 5htp sublingually ( under the tongue) . this causes it to avoid the digestive system and alot more of it actually makes it into your brain.

Tryptophan has none of those problems. Its problem comes from the fact that it is the least absorbed amino acid out of the 20 and has trouble competing with the other ones. Also not alot of tryptophan becomes serotonin, it has other uses in the body such as becomin niacin (vitamin b3). In order to insure more serotonin is made of the supplemental tryptopahn its a good idea to take p5p (bioavailable b6) with it also niacinamide (b3) because b6 encourages its conversion to serotonin where as the niacinmide will tell your body that you have enough b3 and will turn most the tryptophan into serotonin. Also you sould consume it 2 hours after a meal or one hour before AKA on an empty stomach. Causing an insulin spike with a sugary drink also helps clear the blood of competing amino acids and helps the tryptophan make it into the brain.

I would say the most effective way to raise serotonin is to use a combination of both. Lets say 3 grams tryptophan and 100 mg sublingual 5htp. Also add p5p and niacinamide. However I dont advocate messing with neuros till you get them tested cuse u have no idea what is actually wrong and are just guessin based on symptoms .

If all this is still confusing for you I started an almost identical thread a few months ago where i posted all the articles explainin what I just said. Search for it the title is 5htp vs tryptophan and read the articles.

Everyhting sould be clear after that

He told me that to except it was 5htp not tryptophan. He said typtophan is good and no problems with it.

I would only advise ssris as a last option. there are people who healed there neurotransmitters through supplements. i would give that a go for at least 6months before I did pharamacuticals.

really im like 99 percent postive he said 5htp for me. thats weird maybe he got them confused. Either way theres a very small chance tryptophan could be bad for you sinces its found in all protein. 5htp is more unnatural to digest directly since it dosnt really occur in foods.

either way i wouldnt put much weight on it either way. Once im back to trying to fix my neuros im gona supplement both.
